Agreeing to the Harris Voice rules

The Harris Student Commission on Learning exists to help students and teachers work together to learn about what makes teaching and learning more powerful for all students across the Harris Federation.

I understand that Harris Voice is a Commission tool designed to share ideas and research about learning within and across Harris Academies.

This means that everything I contribute and upload will be focused on learning and help the Commission towards its goal.

I understand that the website is for educational purposes and is not designed to be a social networking tool.

I will not post anything that is rude, offensive or threatening. If I spot anything I am unhappy with or which seems inappropriate, it is my responsibility to let a teacher or administrator know straight away.

I understand that if I misuse the site I may have my membership permanently removed.

Other important information about what you can and can’t upload

Uploading – using other people’s stuff

If you want to save yourselves some time by using other people’s media, or spruce up your film with sounds or pictures from somewhere else, you’ll need to understand a bit of copyright law.

For example:

• Music ripped from CDs bought in shops, from films, or from TV shows • Video clips taken from the BBC archives website, or from other downloads • Videos taken from YouTube • Illustrations scanned from textbooks • Professional photographs taken from websites • Students’ performance of music composed by somebody else

Some people think it’s o.k. to use YouTube clips because it would have been taken off YouTube if it was illegal. Unfortunately, lots of material on YouTube is infringing somebody’s copyright. Anything that isn’t, you still can’t use, under the terms of YouTube licences, (see for yourself – section 10)

So, what can you use?

Music from loops or editing software

• Such as GarageBand or Steinberg Sequel then you are probably ok with that stuff.

Material owned by a friend

• Music, film or photos a friend has put together. Remember to get their permission first! Material licensed under Creative Commons

• Loads of people are using Creative Commons, to allow thousands of people around the world to re-use their stuff. You need to check they have a Creative Commons license and as they are different what it allows you to use it for and do to it.

Things to be careful of:

If you use Creative Commons material, it’s no longer entirely yours as bits of it are owned by others. You shouldn’t upload your film to YouTube as this grants YouTube permission to sell your film commercially, but you can’t grant permission for things you don’t own.

Remember!

We also reserve the right not to publish films that we think might be unduly offensive, or that might put anyone at particular risk, particularly children or young people.
